About the Event

The Race for the Golden Helix 5K (GH5K) is an annual 5 km (3.1 mile) open-road race around the beautiful campus of Tennessee Technological University. It is held around Halloween weekend to kick off National Chemistry Week, and there is a Halloween costume contest with awesome prizes! The GH5K course is officially certified by USA Track & Field (USATF).

The race is organized by the Student Affiliates of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) with the assistance of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) and the Chem-Med Club. Proceeds from the GH5K benefit the ASBMB and SMACS clubs, as well as the Cookeville Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic, and the Tennessee Technological University Foundation Chemistry Scholarships. These organizations are imperative to Tennessee Tech students and the Upper Cumberland community alike. The Cookeville Regional Medical Center Foundation provides matching funds from the GH5K race proceeds for the Cookeville RAM Clinic.

Since its inception in 2010, the Race for the Golden Helix has raised over $30,550 and counting in support of these organizations and activities.
